Thinygun Water Festival

Myanmar, at least Yangon, is shut down for the major festival of the year, called Thinygun Water Festival. The actual festival started yesterday on Friday, but preparations have been going on for weeks. We watched stands being built in Mandalay several weeks ago. Here on the street we travel to church there are dozens of stands, each with dozens of hoses. All the businesses were closed on Thursday and yesterday we listened to the music, but this morning we ventured out and walked along the street.

There are small groups of people waiting to throw water on people driving or walking past. We were on the opposite side of the street, but still had several buckets of water poured on us.
People crowd into trucks and drive by getting soaked--on purpose!

The trucks actually stop until all are soaked or until another comes by to get soaked. There are dozens of stands like this.

All along the street, stands with street food and drink are available. The festival ends with the Myanmar New Year which is on the 17th, but the government declared that the entire week would be a holiday so nothing much happens here until the 23rd of April.

We are back at the Sakura afte our walk, soaked in front and back after having buckets of water poured on us. The temperatures here for the last two weeks have had highs in the low 100's and lows in the high 70's so getting wet is a welcome cool down. The branch is having a Youth Conference on Monday and Tuesday at a park--with lots of water guns. Here it is called "water playing" instead of water fights.
We aren't doing much so I may get some other pictures posted this coming week.

What an interesting tradition. I guess it would feel welcome with that sort of heat! Fun pictures. I tried to call you guys last Sunday, but could never get through. I'll try again tomorrow. Love you!

So interesting! I'm glad you're able to cool off one way or another! Sounds like lots of fun.

You should teach them the water game... that would fit right in with their traditions. Instead of a spoon you could use a bucket...

We played the water game, but with a spray bottle at the closing of our English class.
